Panel Discussion
Carolyn Weiss, Principal Planner, City of Eugene
Envision Eugene
How will Eugene grow? The city of Eugene is in a 4 step process:

  • 1. Assess land we have and land we need. It's been determined we will need an additional 1800 acres for 34,000 more people expected.
  • 2. How do we use land more efficiently? This is our current step.
  • 3. If we cannot absorb growth within the Urban Growth Boundary, need to do analysis.
  • 4. Put altogether for approval.

Howard Bonnett, citizen member of the City of Eugene Sustainability Commission
A Community Climate and Enery Action Plan for Eugene
Asks the question: In what way can we accommodate growth and improve quality of life in Eugene?

Eben Fodor, progressive community planner
Discussed planning process:

  • Visions -> goals -> policies
  • Implement - codes, regulations, actions

Vision has been subsumed by goal of how to accommodate 34,000 more people in Eugene. Wants to extend public involvement period, which is set to end the end of May, 2010. Should have at least another year to try to get this right.

Bob Emmons with Landwatch Lane County
Stressed the importance of protecting farm, forest and public lands.

Our annual elections meeting next month, on second Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Hilyard Community Center, 7 - 9 p.m.
